Don't think that Lenovo is keeping the IdeaPad Yoga's bendy secrets all to itself: its Japanese partner NEC is bringing a variant of the ARM-based Yoga 11 to the land of the rising sun as the LaVie Y. The 11.6-inch blend of laptop and tablet keeps the signature 360-degree display, 2GB of RAM and 64GB of storage as its more internationally-minded counterpart, and confirms that there's a quad-core Tegra 3 powering either of the Windows RT systems.
What differences exist will stem from the software: there's hints of a custom NEC app on an otherwise vanilla interpretation of Microsoft's platform. The LaVie Y should precede its IdeaPad sibling by days, arriving in stores around November 22nd, although any local buyers will pay dearly for the privilege with an estimated $1,136 price. We'd suggest that patience ought to be a virtue for everyone else.
[Thanks, Gerald]

How Would you Change ASUS' Transformer Pad TF300?
ASUS' Transformer Pad was tucked in beneath the Transformer Prime in the company's range of hybrid Android tablets. The only problem however, was that the company forgot to really differentiate the two -- with only a few hours less battery life the real distinction. But how has it been for you to live with? Did you get used to its slightly fiddly keyboard, have you been as smitten with it as our reviewer? Step into Jonney Shih's shoes and tell us what you'd suggest he does differently when next year's model comes out.
Hands-on with MSI's S20 Slidebook, a $1,099 Windows 8 convertible Ultrabook
We just got more hands-on time with MSI's S20 Slidebook, which we first spotted at Computex 2012. This ultra light (2.3 pounds / 1kg) and thin (0.78-inches / 19.8mm) convertible Ultrabook runs Windows 8 (naturally) and packs an Intel Core i5 processor (Ivy Bridge), 4GB RAM and a 128GB mSATA SSD. In front, there's a gorgeous 11.6-inch 1920x1080-pixel IPS display with a 10-point capacitive multitouch layer plus an HD front-facing camera. A glossy white plastic bezel surrounds the glass panel and incorporates the MSI logo and the Windows button.
The back cover is made of a silver magnesium alloy with matching plastic antenna covers for the built-in WiFi b/g/n, WiDi and Bluetooth 4.0 radios. Most of the ports are on the right edge along with the power / lock key and LED indicators -- this includes the power input, a standard 3.5mm headphone jack, a mini-HDMI output and a pair of USB 3.0 connectors. You'll find a gigabit Ethernet port on the left side plus an SD card reader, orientation lock button and volume rocker in back.
Of course, what sets the S20 apart is its ability to switch instantly from a tablet into a usable laptop. The screen slides up and tilts forward to reveal a chiclet keyboard with excellent key travel and decent spacing. You're not limited to any specific angle here -- the display is fully adjustable from flat to almost perpendicular with the keyboard. The sealed 3-cell 3900mAh battery is rated for 7 hours of continuous operation. We spent several minutes using the Slidebook and came away pretty impressed -- it's incredibly light for its size, the screen is bright and crisp, and the keyboard is comfortable. Even in prototype form, performance and build-quality are top-notch. MSI plans to make its convertible Ultrabook available late November for $1,099 through major US retailers both online and in stores. The company expects to sell other configurations in other markets as well. Take a look at our gallery below and hit the break for our hands-on video.
Distro Issue 64: Is Apple's iPad mini the next big thing?
Among the truckload of devices that Apple unpacked at its press event a few days ago was a gadget that we had heard rumblings about for a long time. The iPad mini graces the cover of our weekly and we put it through the full review treatment to see how it stacks up with other slates that sport a smaller stature. If Cupertino's latest doesn't grab your eye, we also take a good, long look at Windows 8, ASUS's PadFone 2 and HTC's 8X before offering in-depth analysis. Weekly Stat recaps earnings season, Eyes-On visually fondles a pair of Slingboxes, and video producer Freddie Wong visits the Q&A. Hard Graft Skinny Fit iPhone 5 Case

______________________________________________________________________________
If we look past the new iPhone 5′s easily scratched nature and an odd-by-the-norm elongated candy bar form factor, it is actually a pretty amazing smartphone. The thinness is what impresses us most and we think it would be a shame to bulk it up with thick casing. Its slender line is mean to be showoff and hence we think the Skinny Fit iPhone 5 Case by Hard Graft is the 5′s perfect companion accessory. The interior is of 100% wool felt, providing the right cushion for your precious one while the outside is of classy 100% vegetable tanned Italian leather and the result is an iPhone case with a thickness that befits its namesake. One corner of the case is intentionally left ‘open’ and just enough to allow your headphone to be plugged in without having to removing the phone from the case and finally, a discreet pocket at the back of the case offers a space for your essential card or bills. Though we wouldn’t suggest spoiling its skinny look with cards and cash cos’ it look so good being so thin and still protected. Available now via Hard Graft web store for £65 (around US$105) each.

McLaren MP4-12C Can-Am Edition

_______________________________________________________________________________
If you are one auto enthusiast who settles for nothing but the best, then a race-bred, tricked out McLaren MP4-12C Can-Am Edition might fancy you. the Can-Am Edition is a GT3-inspired exotic ride that’s going to make you stick to your seat with its 630 horsepower (470 kW) mid-mounted 3.8-Liter twin turbo V8 engine. Paying homage to the success in the Can-Am Series (hence, the namesake) during the 60s, the McLaren MP4-12C Can-Am Edition is touted by its British maker to be the “ultimate track car” with more ponies (30 more hp, to be exact) and sporting enhanced aerodynamic tweaks that is said to offer 30 percent more downforce. Though sharing the same carbon fiber MonoCell chassis, this track-special vehicle sets itself apart from the regular road-going MP4-12C and the GT3 racing siblings with a slew of carbon fiber components including door mirror mounts and covers, engine cover vents, side radiator intake vanes, sill covers as well as badges and wrapping up with set of black satin-finished forged lightweight racing alloy wheels, shod in Pirelli racing rubbers. Moving on to the interior, it has a full race interior that include a full FIA-approved race-spec rollcage, a pair of black race seats with six-point harnesses, a bespoke lightweight carbon fiber dashboard and a McLaren GT steering wheel inherited from the 12C GT3 race car. For the added ‘racer comfort’, a motorsport air-conditioning system is included. The McLaren MP4-12C Can-Am Edition will have a very limited production run of not more than 30 units with each costing a whopping £375,000 (roughly US$598,000).

Nintendo Wii Mini Announced

The Nintendo Wii Mini is official. Just a few hours after Best Buy listed the device on its website, Nintendo finally announced the Wii Mini yesterday. Nintendo redesigned its famous gaming console by making it smaller and cheaper for its customers. The Wii Mini focuses mainly on Wii games and it can play more than 1,400 disc-based Wii games. The console sports a matte black color with a red border on it and it will come with a Wii Remote Plus and a red Nunchuk controller.
It will be available on December 7 at a suggested retail price of just $99.99. Unfortunately, Nintendo says that it will only launch the console in Canada, with no word of a global launch. The Wii Mini also lacks Internet connectivity and it cannot play Nintendo GameCube games. “There are games in the Wii library for every type of player,” said Ron Bertram, Nintendo of Canada’s vice president and general manager. “Wii Mini is a great gift for the holidays that brings everyone in the family together to play. Wii Mini has a mini price, but it’s all about big fun.”

Solid E-mail Marketing Advice That Is Proven - Businesses
Many people reject the idea of email promoting because they equate it with spam. It?s a tough job to create email promoting campaigns that are engaging and get customers to buy, but it can be done. Read the following article to learn some strategies you can use right now to start an e-mail marketing campaign or improve an existing one.
When you create an marketing via email customer base list, make sure that your customer has a clear choice to be on the list. If you do not, people will view your messages as spam and simply delete them. Email providers often drop their subscribers if enough complaints warrant your removal for spam violations.
You should focus your email marketing efforts on your most promising customers. It is crucial to be persistent, while delivering a message your readers will find beneficial. If you are talking with the wrong people, they will simply become annoyed.
TIP! Ensure that you offer a simple way out for those who wish to unsubscribe or opt out of your mailings. While they are very inexpensive, each email does cost a bit of money.
The subject of you emails should be kept to a manageable length to ensure people actually read it. Many email providers cut off longer subject lines. Some of them simply can?t show longer than this. Regardless of why it?s important, your subscribers will only need to see that many letters in order to make a judgment as to whether your message is worth keeping.
Use A/B testing strategies when sending emails. Split your mailing list into two groups and mail one email with one subject line to one group and another to the other group. This is a great way to measure the effectiveness of each subject line, helping you to understand how to send out emails that get read.
Keep your customer in mind when you create a campaign to ensure it is effective. What is it that they will want to see? What would they want to read? Find a way to encourage people to buy your products. Use these answers to chart a course for yourself.
TIP! Email only customers who have asked for it. If you send messages to uninterested recipients, they may end up blocking them.

Strippers Are Organized Labor's Newest Heroes
The Atlantic:
The words "labor dispute" make a lot of people imagine big men on a picket line. This, despite the fact that the high-profile workers' struggles of the past year happened in jobs dominated by women stuck with low wages and little respect: from domestic workers securing benefits in New York state, to Chicago's teachers' strikes, to this week's Black Friday actions organized across the country against Wal-Mart.

UCSB Psychologist and Anthropologist to Give Faculty Research ...
Nike?Cosmides
Leda Cosmides and John?Tooby
Leda Cosmides and John Tooby, UC Santa Barbara professors of psychology and anthropology, respectively, and co-directors of the campus?s Center for Evolutionary Psychology, will give UCSB?s 2012 Faculty Research Lecture on Wednesday, November 28, at 4:30 p.m. in the University Center?s Corwin?Pavilion.
Awarded annually, the Faculty Research Lectureship is considered the highest honor bestowed by the university faculty on one of its members. It was established in 1955, and Cosmides and Tooby share the 57th award. In their talk, ?Climbing Down Inside the Human Operating System: Exploring the Evolved Programs That Run Our Species,? Cosmides and Tooby will highlight some of their research into the interlocking designs of evolved programs specialized for cooperation, bargaining, and altruism. They also will discuss the relevance of these to economics, anthropology, and human?life.
Credited with creating and shaping the modern framework for evolutionary psychology, Cosmides and Tooby offer an approach to cognition culture that is considered one of the most important new perspectives in the cognitive sciences in the past 50 years. The field of evolutionary psychology weaves together evolutionary biology, cognitive science, human evolution, hunter-gatherer studies, neuroscience, and psychology to discover the mechanisms of the human mind and brain. By understanding the adaptive problems our hunter-gatherer ancestors faced during their evolution, researchers can uncover the detailed functional designs of the reasoning systems, emotions, and motivations that evolution has?produced.
A central feature of their respective careers is a sustained ?? and, indeed, escalating ?? rate of scientific productivity. Their work has received more than 20,000 citations, with more than 50 papers cited at least 50 times. In addition, their research has appeared in top journals, including Nature, Science, the Proceedings of the Royal Society of London, the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Psychological Review, Psychological Bulletin, Behavioral and Brain Sciences, and Harvard Business?Review.
Recipients of numerous honors and awards, they were jointly recognized as recipients of the J.S. Guggenheim Memorial Award, and Cosmides was selected for a 2005 National Institutes of Health Directors? Pioneer Award, an honor she shared with Tooby. Only 23 of these awards have ever been given, and Cosmides is the only behavioral scientist ever to receive one. The award is reserved for those ?willing and able to explore ideas that were considered risky at the inception,? and who are ?truly visionary thinkers who are able to make those leaps and change the current paradigms of medical?research.?
Tooby joined the Department of Anthropology at UCSB in 1990, and Cosmides joined the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences in 1991. Both professors completed their undergraduate and graduate degrees at Harvard, and were fellows at Stanford University?s Center for Advanced Study before becoming members of the UCSB?faculty.
Parking for the event will be available in Lot?22.
