Halloween is a fun time of year . . . and the onset of the official fall/winter holiday season. ? A lot of small business do market for the Halloween season . . . gift shops, flower shops, and bakeries are a great example of businesses that typically do well on this holiday. . . but there are many small businesses who don?t utilize Halloween, and it really can be a great opportunity to connect with customers.

Here are five tips for small business marketing for the Halloween holiday:

1. Have your staff dress up on Halloween as their favorite characters. ? Take photos and post them on your social media pages (Flickr, Facebook, Twitter, etc.) so people can see that your business is fun!

2. Have a costume contest ? have your customers submit pictures via your social media pages of their kids in costume and give away some prizes (recognize the most original, scariest, funniest, etc.). ?Your customers most likely have kids, and a lot of them put a great deal of effort into their children?s halloween costumes. ?They would love to be recognized and this is a great way to do that, while increasing customer loyalty.

3. Have a Halloween decoration contest ? a lot of people love to dress up their yards and houses for Halloween. ?I remember when I lived in Atlanta, there was this one street ? and every single house was lit up with amazing Halloween stuff, people would go to that street just to see what they would do every year! ?Again ? people put so much work and effort into this process, they would love to be recognized.

3. Create a Halloween theme ? add some Halloween elements to your social media pages, newsletter, and in your store ? to let people know you are in the spirit of things!

4. Partner with companies that are offering Halloween products ? the flower shops, costume shops, card shops, hardware store (for pumpkins), etc. ? and offer a coupon or a Halloween guide to your customers, that shows them where they can get cool Halloween stuff . . . for decorating, costuming, etc.

5. Have a Halloween bake-off ? have your customers submit their recipes online for their favorite Halloween goodies! ? You could share these ideas in your email newsletter, or print them out and share them in your store.

There are so many fun things that you can do for Halloween and your customers will love you for it ? it is a festive, rather zany type of year when people are genuinely having fun. ?Let your business share the fun and reap the benefits of customer loyalty, too!

ThreeWorks Apple Chips

The kids have been back to school for almost two months now, we pretty much have the routine in tact from getting up and ready to returning home and of course enjoying that after school afternoon snack. Ever notice it seems the whole family could use a pick-me-up around 3pm? Afternoon snacks are an every day ritual in our house, the kids are always scouring the cupboards and fridge for something quick to munch on.

As any parent, I want my kids to enjoy a healthy afternoon snack. Not junk food with empty calories, loaded with sugar that will have them jumping off the walls and crashing by the time supper is on the table.

We were recently introduced to Apple Chips by ThreeWorks Inc! They are a healthy alternative to one of our original favourite snacks, chips - except instead of being made from potatoes they are made from Apples!

ThreeWorks Inc are a Toronto, Ontario based food company offering different healthy alternative options for food and beverage to families across Canada. They are also helping sponsor my trip to ShesConnected Conference, they supplied the funds I'll need to feed myself during the trip - how fitting a sponsorship!

ThreeWorks sent us along a cute gift basket of Apple Chips goodies in a variety of flavours for us to try and information about them to share with all of you.

ThreeWorks Apple Chips launched in Canada earlier this year. Apple Chips are unlike your typical dried fruit snack. They are dehydrated using a proprietary technique to retain all of the nutriens and the crunch. If you love the crunch of a potatoe chip, Apple Chips will surprise you but with more goodness. Apple Chips are made with the best real sliced Fuji Apples for a sweeter, less tart snacking experience. Apple Chips are fat free, gluten free, not fried and have no added sugar or GMO. Apple Chips have no artificial colours or flavours, all natural.

Apple Chips come in 6 flavours including Original, Cinnamon, Caramel and Mixed Berries which we got to try out. Apple Chips come in a resealable container (similar to that of a popular potatoe chip we all know) and in two sizes! One to share and one perfect for on the go! Apple Chips are all natural and also nut-free so they make a great healthy snack to send off to school or on outings.

Our?package of Apple Chips goodness arrived just in time for after school snacking. The kids are always interested?in trying out any new foods and didn't resist the?Apple Chips. Although we haven't tried them all just yet, I can imagine they are all yummy considering we all really liked the Cinnamon and Mixed Berry?flavoured ones. ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) ? Albert Pujols has hit his first regular-season home run since joining the Los Angeles Angels, ending the longest drought of his 12-year career after 33 games and 139 at-bats.

Pujols' two-run shot into the left-field bullpen Sunday came in the fifth inning against Toronto's Drew Hutchison.

Pujols was playing his 28th game for the Angels since leaving St. Louis and signing a $240 million, 10-year contract. The homer, estimated at 390 feet, came in his 111 at-bat for the Angels.

The three-time NL MVP hit seven home runs in spring training. His regular-season drought began last year with the Cardinals.

Pujols' home run was his 446th in the big leagues. The only game he's missed this season was Saturday night's 6-2 victory, when manager Mike Scioscia gave him the day off.

Pujols' longest homer drought prior to this was in 2011, when he came up empty in 27 straight games and 105 at-bats. His longest previous drought at the start of a season was in 2008, when he failed to get one in his first eight games and 27 at-bats. The 32-year-old first baseman averaged 40.5 home runs during his 11 seasons with the Cardinals, including a career-best 49 in 2006. He is the only player in major league history to hit at least 30 homers in each of his first 11 big league seasons.

This was Pujols' first home run at Angel Stadium, the 31st big league ballpark in which he's hit one.

Faced with Breivik's unflinching account, Norway surprises world with its civility

To contact us Click HERE

A reporter covering Anders Behring Breivik's trial marvels at the degree of civility Norwegians have shown him, considering the brutality of the July 2011 terror attacks and his lack of remorse.

In the first two weeks of Anders Behring Breivik's trial, the Norwegian man reiterated his conviction that he did the right thing when he killed 77 people on July 22, 2011 ? even if it meant shooting unarmed Labor party youth members as young as 14 trapped on an island or bombing government buildings in Oslo. Those killed were??legitimate political targets,? he said.

The attacks were ?gruesome but necessary" for preventing Labor from continuing to undermine Norwegian society with its lenient immigration policies, Mr. Breivik said. The party had betrayed the country by promoting the Islamic colonization of Norway and ipso facto the ethnic cleansing of indigenous Norwegians. He would do it all again, he said.?

International onlookers have been shocked to see how civil the whole trial is proceeding, given the scale and brutality of his crimes ? together they are?the worst national tragedy the country has experienced since World War II ??and Breivik's lack of remorse.?

On April 16, the first day of the 10-week trial, a lineup of prosecutors, forensic psychiatrists, and the legal counsel for the victims all approached Breivik in court to shake his hand. Wearing a suit and neatly trimmed beard, he politely extended his right hand to greet them. Outside, people lined up orderly to enter Oslo District Court. There was not a single sign denouncing him, nor any banners calling for the death penalty.

On the second day of the trial, he was allowed to begin his six-day testimony of what happened in the years leading up to the attack, including his preparation for that day. At the end of the first week he recounted, in chilling detail, of how, after packing a ham and cheese sandwich that morning, he shot and killed 69 people at the Labor party youth summer camp on Ut?ya with a Glock pistol and Ruger semi-automatic rifle.

If this all sounds surreal, that?s because it is.?

It is surreal to see a well-dressed upper class man sit in a court and calmly explain how he killed Norwegians to prevent Norway?s demise. It?s incomprehensible to hear how a man, who supposedly had all the economic means and generous provisions of a cradle-to-grave welfare system, could turn into Norway?s most notorious killer in modern times. And that is part of what scares Norwegians: the thought that he is one of them.?

Despite the atrocity of his crimes and his behavior, Norwegians still want to see him get a fair trial. But that means?he has a legal right to explain himself in court, even if there is a risk that he spreads his propaganda. The trial is also key in determining Breivik's sanity, which is at the crux of this case. The prosecution even defended his right to keep reading from his prepared speech on his first day of testimony in spite of protests from the legal counsel for the victims, who were offended by his one-hour long monologue.?

Rare Met revival of Britten's shipboard opera

To contact us Click HERE

NEW YORK (AP) ? Absent from the Metropolitan Opera for 15 years, Benjamin Britten's great maritime tragedy "Billy Budd" has made a brief but welcome return in the season's closing days.

If the lead singers were a variable lot at Friday's premiere, the night was still a success because the real stars of the show ? the conductor, the chorus and the set ? all performed magnificently.

That set, designed by William Dudley for the 1978 John Dexter production, is a cutaway depiction against a black background of the H.M.S. Indomitable, a British gunship sailing toward battle with the French in 1797. When the action begins, we're on the main deck, but as scenes change, the ship seamlessly shifts and grows before our eyes, taking us down to the captain's cabin and the sailors' berths and even expanding to reveal seven levels at once.

In adapting Herman Melville's novella, Britten and his librettists ? E.M. Forster and Eric Crozier ? invented a prologue and epilogue in which Captain Vere, now an old man, reflects on the events of the story. In brief, a good-natured young foretopman, Billy Budd, is falsely accused by the master-at-arms, John Claggart, of fomenting mutiny. Tongue-tied, Billy strikes Claggart dead, and Vere ? despite his conviction that Billy is innocent ? feels he has no choice but to see him hanged.

The role of the captain (originally written for Britten's life partner, Peter Pears) was taken in this revival by tenor John Daszak in his Met debut. He sang with a bright, pungent tone and notably crisp diction, though his sound occasionally turned strident on high notes. Dramatically, he was persuasive both as an old man tormented by guilt and as an embattled captain facing an impossible choice.

Baritone Nathan Gunn performed the title role, looking the epitome of Melville's handsome sailor and acting with youthful vigor. He sang sweetly in quiet moments like "Billy in the Darbies," his haunting aria on the eve of execution, but much of the time one longed for a more powerful sound.

Bass James Morris has virtually owned the role of Claggart at the Met, but his voice has lost strength, especially at the low end. He etched a subdued portrait of a corrupt soul who cannot tolerate the presence of unalloyed goodness in the world.

There were many strong contributions from the all-male cast, starting with the chorus, whose role in this opera is vital. The fine trio of officers consisted of baritone Dwayne Croft ? a former Billy himself ? and bass-baritones Kyle Ketelson and the debuting Ryan McKinny. Tenor Keith Jameson was impressive as the Novice, the weak-willed sailor who does Claggart's dirty work.

David Robertson, making a too-infrequent appearance, conducted the Met orchestra in an energetic and moving performance of Britten's score, which is filled with surging melodic themes amid its spiky dissonances.

HBT: O's 1B takes mound, tops Red Sox in 17

To contact us Click HERE

It wasn?t pretty, but in many ways, Chris Davis had the most remarkable day on a baseball field that I can ever remember.

Starting at DH, Davis fanned in his first five at-bats, hit into a double play into his sixth and grounded out in his seventh before moving to the mound to pitch the 16th and 17th innings and picking up a win in a 9-6 game against the Red Sox.

Davis very nearly took the loss in the 16th, but Marlon Byrd was gunned down at home plate on Mike Aviles? double with two outs. The Red Sox then turned to a position player of their own in the 17th, and Darnell McDonald gave up a three-run homer to Adam Jones, giving the Orioles a 9-6 lead.

After Jones? homer, Davis grounded out, making him 0-for-8 on the day.

The bottom of the 17th started with an infield single off Davis? glove and a Dustin Pedroia walk, but Adrian Gonzalez struck out on three pitches to put a cap on his own 0-for-8 day and McDonald grounded into a double play to end it.

Davis became the first position player to win a game since Philadelphia?s Wilson Valdez got a victory in the 19th inning of a game last May 25. Before that, the last to do it was Rockies catcher Brent Mayne in 2000.

Davis?started his outing showing a 90-91 mph fastball, but he quickly faded into the mid-80s in the 17th. Of course, it still worked out for him. McDonald was sitting in the 81-83 mph range in his inning of work.

Despite having three opportunities, Davis managed to avoid picking up his sixth strikeout. He could have been just the eighth player to reach that mark (dating back to 1918) and the first since Milwaukee?s Geoff Jenkins in 2004.

Mice That Eat Yogurt Have Larger Testicles

To contact us Click HERE

Last sum?mer a team of researchers from the Massa?chusetts Institute of Technology set out to better understand the effects of yogurt on obesity. They were following up on the results of a long-term study from the Harvard School of Public Health that had suggested yogurt, more than any other food, helped to prevent age-related weight gain. The M.I.T. team, led by cancer biologist Susan Erdman and evolutionary geneticist Eric Alm, wanted to replicate the work in mice. The researchers took a group of 40 males and 40 females and either fed the animals a high-fat, low-fiber, low-nutrient diet meant to mimic junk food or fed them standard mouse meals. They then supple?mented half of each diet group with vanilla-flavored yogurt.

Their goal was to understand how a probiotic diet affects rates of obesity and its related compli?ca?tions, including cancer. But ?the most entertaining aspects of all this were things we didn?t anticipate,? Erdman says.

First, the scientists noticed that the yogurt-eating mice were incredibly shiny. Using both traditional histology techniques and cosmetic rating scales, the researchers showed that these animals had 10 times the active follicle density of other mice, resulting in luxuriantly silky fur.

Then the researchers spotted some?thing particular about the males: they projected their testes outward, which endowed them with a certain ?mouse swagger,? Erdman says. On measuring the males, they found that the testicles of the yogurt consumers were about 5 percent heavier than those of mice fed typical diets alone and around 15 percent heavier than those of junk-eating males.

More important, that masculinity pays off. In mating experiments, yogurt-eating males inseminated their partners faster and produced more offspring than control mice. Conversely, females that ate the yogurt diets gave birth to larger litters and weaned those pups with greater success. Reflecting on their unpublished results, Erdman and Alm think that the probiotic microbes in the yogurt help to make the animals leaner and healthier, which indirectly improves sexual machismo.

The findings could have implications for human fertility. In ongoing work, a team led by Harvard nutritional epidemiologist Jorge Chavarro has looked at the association between yogurt intake and semen quality in men. ?So far our preliminary findings are consistent with what they see in the mice,? Chavarro says.

Column: Losing the Ryder Cup? Unthinkable

To contact us Click HERE

MEDINAH, Ill. (AP) ? The Europeans had just begun to celebrate their improbable and delightfully sweet Ryder Cup win when Rory McIlroy and U.S. captain Davis Love III ran into each other amid the boisterous scene just off the 18th green.

"Glad you could make it on time," Love said, drawing a laugh from McIlroy.

Getting there on time wasn't a problem for the Americans. They were there early, enjoying their final day as a team together, maybe even getting in a few last pingpong matches.

They just didn't show up to play.

Maybe it was complacency. The U.S. almost always wins the singles matches, and with a 10-6 lead going into the final day it was time to start preparing victory speeches and choose the kind of champagne they wanted to spray on each other.

Losing the Ryder Cup? Unthinkable.

Well, almost. Love himself was up late the night before thinking about 1999, when he was a member of the U.S. team that staged a memorable comeback at Brookline to win a Ryder Cup everyone had already given to the Europeans.

He thought about it again when he woke up at 6:15 a.m. on the one Ryder Cup morning everyone was supposed to sleep in a bit.

"I know what we felt like going into it, and the stunning defeat that they had that day," Love said. "We knew that they remembered that, as well. Exact same score."

The urgency seemed to be lost on his players. After having their way with the Europeans the first two days, there was no indication they thought the singles matches would be any different.

Especially not at home, where comebacks like the one at Brookline just don't happen for the visiting team.

Except these weren't just any ordinary visitors. They proved it the late afternoon before, when Ian Poulter made them believe anything was possible when he birdied the last five holes to pull out a point in near darkness that the Americans were already putting up on their board.

Yes, they were down. But they were pumped.

"The whole atmosphere of the team changed last night," Luke Donald said.

To change the atmosphere on the course, though, Europe had to get something going early. Both sides knew it, and it was little secret that European captain Jose Maria Olazabal would frontload the lineup to put his stars out first in the hope they could turn things around.

Love could have countered him with Phil Mickelson, or even Tiger Woods. Instead, he chose the jittery and emotional Bubba Watson to lead off against Donald, one of the coolest characters you'll find in golf.

The results were predictable. The best part of Watson's day came on the first tee when he got the crowd to cheer wildly during his swing. After that he went through the motions until he finally realized on the 15th hole that the next hole he didn't win would be his last.

Keegan Bradley followed two groups behind him, ready to tilt things the U.S. way after two days of winning ? and celebrating ? with partner Phil Mickelson. But without his on-course BFF he didn't seem to have the same spark as McIlroy ? who had to commandeer a ride from a state trooper just to get to the first tee on time ? and the best player in the world took him down without even warming up.

"I thought it was a great plan," Love said. "The first two teams that were supposed to win didn't win. It didn't work."

Not all great plans do work. As Mike Tyson always liked to say, everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face, and the punch the Americans took came when the Europeans won the first five matches of the day.

The rout was over. Now the Americans were nervously looking at scoreboards, never a good thing in the Ryder Cup.

"When I went past the board at No. 10 tee, saw a lot of blue up on the board, started doing the math," Steve Stricker said, when asked when he first noticed things were amiss. "Kind of figured that it was going to come down to Tiger or I in the last two groups."

Love had a contingency plan for that, too. He had hand-picked Stricker and Jim Furyk to be on the team, certain they would be the backbone of the team, the veteran players he could count on when things got tough.

When that didn't work ? Stricker and Furyk both coughed it up on the final two holes ? he had Woods to finish things up. The only thing was, things were all finished by then. Woods stood helplessly in the 18th fairway, iron in hand, watching as Martin Kaymer sank the winning putt and the celebration began. Woods and Francesco Molinari had to play over the celebrants to finish out their match, with Woods whiffing a 3-footer to give Europe its final 14?-13? margin.

"You come here as a team and you win or lose as a team, and it's pointless to even finish," Woods said.

The record books will show it as a collapse of epic proportions, though the U.S. players insisted they all played well. Furyk went as far as saying that even his opponent, Sergio Garcia, would agree he was outplayed, even if the scoreboard didn't show it.

If they were in denial, it's hard to blame them. A day that had started with such promise had gone bad so fast it was difficult to digest it all properly.

The comparisons will all be to 1999 because the scores were all so similar. The only thing missing were the thousands of wildly cheering fans, though the European fans who were there sang and cheered and drank well into the night.

"That was fun," Furyk said of Brookline. "This was pretty miserable."

Proof, perhaps, that turnaround isn't always such fair play.

Need advice...am I the crazy one? | Step Talk

To contact us Click HERE

DH informed me over the weekend that BM of SD 8 and SS 6 had apparently been reminiscing with the children and watching old home movies from when they were still married (it's been 3 years since their divorce). BM said this made SD very upset, she cried and said she "just wanted her family back."

DH and I had no idea what to do. We agreed that we thought it was inappropriate for BM to watch those videos with the children, showing them a life that doesn't exist anymore...but I am torn.

He took SD 8 out on a walk yesterday afternoon to talk. He reiterated that she shouldn't be sad about seeing the videos because there was a lot of unhappiness and fighting that she didn't know about when her parents were married, and that she has a lot to be happy and thankful for now because she has 2 families that love her. She agreed and said she got upset mostly because mommy was crying while they were watching, and that she just missed being young again (she was around 5 in the video).

I understand it's important for the children to not block out memories of what their life used to be, but at the same time I can't help but feel like BM showed the videos to the kids to intentionally upset them (she recently found that I am pregnant with our first child and is not taking it well at all). DH and I agreed that this seems like her attempt at keeping the skids from being happy about the new baby/our family in general.

My question is...are DH and I crazy? Is it healthy for BM to be watching home videos of them being a family together with her children and CRYING while doing so? Or am I correct in feeling like this could be a form of emotional abuse?

Vegan Noms: Vegan MoFo: Pizza Kale Chips Recipe

To contact us Click HERE

In the mood for a crunchy, salty, savory, sinful-feeling snack? You and I are going to be great friends. Being a huge lover of comfort foods like pizza I jumped on the chance to try local brand Good'n'Raw kale chips. Based in Lakewood, OH, this company describes its mission to be "To increase the potential of humanity naturally, with nutritious, living foods".

They have 5 different types of kale chips that I've seen: Pizza, Chizee, Sesame, BBQ, and Ranch. Each container runs btwn. $8.50 and $10, so they're a rare treat. I took home the Pizza and Chizee flavors and was BLOWN AWAY. Each was so fantastic and complex and tasted sooooo naughty. But, with kale as the base and whole, nutrient-packed ingredients as they flavoring these morsels are a healthy treat.

Wanting to replicate the taste of the Pizza kale chips I created a recipe of my own, which I would like to share. Behold!

Pizza Kale Chips

1 bunch kale, rinsed & torn into chunks

1 container grape or cherry tomatoes

1 tbs olive oil

1/2 cup raw cashews

1/4 cup nutritional yeast

spices to taste: garlic powder, basil, thyme, oregano, salt, black pepper.

  • Heat stove to 350 degrees
  • Rub baking tray with olive oil and spread tomatoes out. Roast for 30 minutes.
  • Lower oven temp to 200 degrees.
  • Mix tomatoes and other ingredients (except kale) in high-speed blender until creamy.
  • In large bowl mix kale chunks with the paste until completely covered.
  • Spread onto as many as 3 lined baking sheets (w/ foil or parchment paper), making sure to leave some space between the kale so it will cook more quickly. Place baking sheets in oven and leave oven door slightly ajar.
  • Check kale every 30 minutes or so, turning the pieces and removing any that have become perfectly crispy. Continue checking until all kale is crispy (btwn 2 & 3 hours). Do not immediately store or else kale will become soggy!

You will not regret making these and I wouldn't be surprised if they disappeared in a day! So tasty. What's your favorite way to prepare kale?

The worst thing about acne is the scars and the marks it leaves behind. Some of the scars tend to disappear with time but some are so grave that it can be disfiguring which may make our heart sink.

The post acne marks is the hyper pigmented or red marks and is called as the post inflammatory marks. These marks take at least 6-12 months to completely disappear. When these marks last longer than a year then it turns into a scar. A number of things could be done to reduce the redness and to quicken its pace to disappear. There are also a number of home remedies available. Following are some of them.

Rub lemon juice on the scar/marks. This will lighten the colour. Apply the juice and leave it on for about 10 minutes. Wash off your face and then apply a sun block lotion.

Make a paste of sandalwood powder, black gram powder and rose water. Apply it on the area and I possible leave it overnight. Wash it with cold water the next morning. If you find that it makes you skin too dry then add some milk into it.

A Wake-Up Call for YSL's PR Team | BoF ? The Business of Fashion

Source: Dandy Diary

PARIS, France ??A few weeks ago, Yves Saint Laurent?s PR team wrote to BoF, asking that we edit a tweet.

We had shared one of the striking new Saint Laurent campaign images with our followers, referring to the campaign as ?Saint Laurent Paris.? Brands often write to thank us for sharing their advertising campaigns with our community, but this was the first time that a brand had written asking us to rewrite a tweet.

What was the problem?

?Paris is only used in the logo and not for the?RTW?name, that being just ?Saint Laurent,?? the PR wrote, referring to a number of changes to brand communications implemented by Hedi Slimane when he took the creative reins at the house. As many in the PR and communications world know, however, tweets are not editable. They are also usually consumed within the first hours, if not minutes, of having been published and are soon buried under the hundreds of others that come in their wake. But not wanting to get into a debate, we simply deleted the tweet and edited a corresponding Tumblr post displaying the campaign image in question.

Then, last week, Saint Laurent?s press office sent out a mass email instructing media on the nomenclature we should use when referring to the brand. ?The House is referred to as ?Yves Saint Laurent.? The ready-to-wear collection by Hedi Slimane is correctly referred to as ?Saint Laurent?. (?Saint Laurent Paris? is used in the logo but not when spoken/written about the collection). Collection credits, should you photograph any items, is [sic] correctly written ?Saint Laurent by Hedi Slimane.??

Another mass email soon followed, saying that the previous email was ?not for official use or for lifting quotes.?

Oops.

It was the latest in a series of bizarre communications from a PR team whose attempts to control communication about YSL?? whether coming directly from the brand itself or independent media outlets ? seems obsessive. In today?s media reality, where words and images can be shared and commented on by millions of end users on social platforms like Facebook and Twitter, seeking this kind of control is not only doomed to failure, but it is also misguided.

When?YSL?introduced a new logo for the house, designed by Mr Slimane, on the brand?s Facebook page earlier this summer, minus any explanatory context, they had apparently not considered how their fanbase might react. Instead of adulation and adoration, thousands of YSL?s Facebook fans led a sizable backlash, partially because there was misunderstanding around how the new branding would actually be used.

A few weeks earlier, we thought it would be constructive to set the record straight. So, in an extensive feature on YSL?s new ?retrobranding,? BoF took care to explain the details and thinking behind the moves, collecting background information from?YSL?in order to understand their rationale and speaking with branding experts to gauge their reaction. The piece was widely picked up by other media and credited with helping to clarify YSL?s new branding strategy. But still, shortly after publication, we received yet another email from the company, this time from YSL?s New York press office, asking us to revise our piece without specifying what they thought was incorrect. A follow up email from our team asking for clarification was met with silence.

You see, BoF has always aimed to provide a factual, balanced and analytical perspective and when we make mistakes, we strive to correct them. Indeed, we take this very seriously. So, I must confess my surprise when I was informed by the House of Saint Laurent that I would not be invited to Hedi Slimane?s debut show for the brand because they were unhappy with the ?tone of voice? that we have used when writing about?YSL.

Upon further investigation, it seems they took issue with the content of some of our pieces.

Specifically, they did not agree with our columnist Colin McDowell?s conclusion that while Slimane?s work at Dior Homme was massively influential and built a huge cult following, ?it didn?t always translate into convincing sales.? When we explained our thinking, namely that no designer can claim that every single collection is a commercial success, and politely declined to change the article, we were informed via email: ?Don?t correct, fare [sic] enough, we won?t collaborate on any kind of project in the future.?

More recently, the brand took issue with a piece?we published, mentioning that some in the industry (including highly regarded?New York Times?critic Cathy Horyn) credit Raf Simons with pioneering the skinny silhouette in menswear, ?though it was undoubtedly Slimane?s reign at Dior Homme that made it a commercial success, bringing it into the fashion mainstream.?

In all my years editing BoF, I have never encountered this kind of ultimatum from a fashion brand threatening non-cooperation. Indeed, every single time BoF has written about?YSL?(or Saint Laurent, or Saint Laurent Paris) we have received some kind of request to change the article to comply with what seem like the whims of the brand?s PR team, who appear to think that the media exists solely to serve as their mouthpiece.

Perhaps I should have been honoured that ? along with Ms. Horyn, a writer who always calls it like she sees it and whom I greatly respect, even if I do not always agree with her ? I was not invited to this season?s?YSL?show. But when a friend offered me a spare standing ticket to attend at the last minute, I couldn?t resist the opportunity to see Hedi Slimane?s debut for myself and I decided to go.

Despite all of the hype and anticipation, it was clear from the first few looks that the collection wasn?t going to change the future of women?s fashion, as Slimane had done for menswear during his tenure at Dior Homme. Everything I saw was true to the codes of the house and very 1970?s?YSL?? undoubtedly desirable for those in the market for a French rocker chick vibe. But perhaps, the somewhat muted applause and hushed voices after the show were the most telling.

I?m still not sure if attending the show was the right decision. Part of me thinks I should have just stayed away, but as my peer Lisa Armstrong wrote in her review?in the Telegraph,??Judging by [Slimane?s] apparent fear of any kind of objective criticism, however, I fear I won?t be allowed back.?

Ultimately, this kind of behaviour is not only arrogant, it also reveals a fundamental misunderstanding of how winning brands are built in today?s world. Successful brands aren?t defined by a set of rules conceived in the control tower of a company?s headquarters and broadcast to the world. They are ideas that live in conversation with the world. They can?t be dictated. They must be nurtured.

It?s a serious wake-up call for a PR team that is clearly living in the pre-digital age.
