Sony's new portable entertainment device:PlayStation Vita
Battery life is admittedly the Achilles' heel of the Vita, but it's not as bad as many are making it out to be. With Bluetooth turned off, I'm getting at least five hours of solid gaming out of a charge.
John Koller, director of hardware marketing, Sony Computer Entertainment America, said that Sony has a 10-year plan for PS Vita, just as the company has continued to market PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 for the long-term. But things are evolving at a much faster rate in the portable games space than in the home console market.
There's no storage on board the Vita, and your growing collection of SD and microSD cards won't help - you'll need to purchase a memory card in Sony's new proprietary format that is designed specifically for the Vita.
The first thing you'll notice is the 5-inch OLED touchscreen with 960 × 544 resolution that clocks in at 220 pixels per inch (ppi). On paper, that might seem a fair way behind Apple's Retina Display levels (326 ppi), but make no mistake - this is a big, bright, gorgeous screen - and counting pixels will be the last thing on your mind once you start playing.
Review:Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G
No hardware element reinforces the Blaze 4G as a mid-range phone more than its display. On one hand, the 4-inch, WVGA Super AMOLED is a known quantity that's found widespread acceptance. It offers excellent contrast and color saturation, provides admirable viewing angles and is decently workable in direct sunlight. On the other hand, its PenTile matrix is poorly suited for text, which results in a subtle blurriness that's characteristic of the technology. Samsung could've easily justified the price of the Blaze 4G had it included a Super AMOLED Plus display, which rectifies this problem with its proportionately sized sub-pixels. Alternatively, it could've included a higher-res display for improved sharpness. Instead, users will merely need to settle for par.
Review: HTC Sense 4
Sense 4 is a different story. It's lighter, cleaner and much more visually appealing than older versions of the user interface, and it has the full suite of ICS goodies to go along with it. HTC also throws in its own imaging technology, dubbed ImageSense, to offer some cool new enhancements to the camera. Ultimately, HTC has successfully tweaked Sense's design in a way that keeps the spirit of stock Android 4.0 alive, while still offering something familiar to loyal HTC fans.
Another Sense staple that's sticking around for the long haul is the overview screen, which gives you a card-style view of all seven home panels. It's still accessible by tapping once on the home capacitive key or using pinch-to-zoom, and once you arrive here you'll be able to change the panel order and even add or remove unwanted screens. This comes in handy if you're looking to avoid clutter.
Finally, long presses have changed a bit. For instance, performing this gesture on the capacitive keys no longer do anything. Doing it on one of the home panels, however, takes you into a modified screen with a layout that emulates what you'd see if you did the same thing on a Honeycomb tablet: it pulls up a menu that shows thumbnails of your main panels on the top, tabs for widgets, apps and shortcuts on the bottom and a section in the middle that allows you to choose from a variety of options related to whichever tab you've selected. When looking at widgets, for instance, you can use a drop-down menu or do a search to quickly find something specific. This part of Sense seems to take advantage of the ICS design style, but the screen itself is nowhere to be seen on the stock version.

Obama should attack what Bain and JPMorgan have in common
Rather than lobbing generalized? attacks at Mitt Romney and American business, Obama should attack a particular kind of capitalism that Romney and JPMorgan both practice: using other peoples? money to make big bets which, if they go wrong, can wreak havoc on the economy.

That way his so-called ?attack? on private equity is neither a personal attack on Mitt Romney nor a generalized attack on American business.
It?s an attack on a particular kind of capitalism that Romney and JPMorgan both practice: Using other peoples? money to make big bets which, if they go wrong, can wreak havoc on the economy.
It?s the substitution of casino capitalism for real capitalism, the dominance of the betting parlor over the real business of America, financial innovation rather than product innovation.
It?s been terrible for the American economy and for our democracy.
It?s also why Obama has to come out swinging about JPMorgan. The JPMorgan Chase debacle would have been prevented if the Volcker Rule were sufficiently strict, prohibiting banks from using commercial deposits to make bets except very specific offsetting bets (hedges) on narrow classes of trades.
But Jamie Dimon and JPMorgan have been lobbying like mad to loosen the Volcker Rule and widen that exception to include the very kind of reckless bets JPMorgan made. And they?re still at it, as evidenced by Dimon?s current claim that the rule that eventually emerges would allow those bets.
As a practical matter, the Volcker Rule is hopeless. It was intended to be Glass-Steagall lite ? a more nuanced version of the original Depression-era law that separated commercial from investment banking. But JPMorgan has proven that any nuance ? any exception ? will be stretched beyond recognition by the big banks.
So much money can be made when these bets turn out well that the big banks will stop at nothing to keep the spigot open.
There?s no alternative but to resurrect Glass-Steagall as a whole. Even then, the biggest banks are still too big to fail or to regulate. We also need to heed the recent advice of the Dallas branch of the Federal Reserve, and break them up.
At the same time, there?s no point to the ?carried interest? loophole that allows private-equity managers like Mitt Romney to treat their incomes as capital gains, taxed at only 15 percent, when they?ve risked no money of their own.
If private equity were good for America it wouldn?t need this or the other tax preference it depends on, elevating debt over equity. But the private equity industry has huge political clout, which is why these tax preferences remain.
Get it? Bain Capital and JPMorgan are parts of the same problem. The President should be leading the charge against both.

Drunk birds had one-too-many berries to blame
After overindulging in berries, flocks of cedar waxwings flew drunkenly to their doom. That's the conclusion of a new report in the Journal of Ornithology.
Cedar waxwings have evolved to live on a diet that averages 84 per cent fruit. But those evolutionary innovations backfired on several occasions between 2005 and 2007 when flocks of them died after crashing into windows and fences in broad daylight in the Los Angeles area.
Residents puzzled by the deaths sent the bodies to the California Animal Health and Food Safety Laboratory in San Bernardino. Necropsies performed by Hailu Kinde and colleagues at the lab showed the birds had been healthy when they gorged on berries from the Brazilian pepper tree, then died from ruptured livers or other traumas caused by the collisions.
Flocking hell
Cedar waxwings have the most fruit-rich diet of all North American birds, and dining on overripe berries can leave them visibly tipsy. Their short intestines can process large volumes of fruit, and their large livers ? about 5 per cent of body mass ? can break down toxic ethanol before it causes serious damage.
Yet although earlier studies had found isolated birds that had died from collisions when flying drunk, no one had seen whole flocks careen to their doom.
Now Kinde and colleagues report that the downfall of the flocks came from eating too many berries. Lacking a crop ? the expandable pouch near the throat used to store food ? waxwings stow meals in a distensible oesophagus. "When the fruit stays in the oesophagus, it ferments and produces ethanol," says Kinde.
The waxwings had ingested so many berries that their large livers "could not keep up with the alcohol produced by the fermentation", with ethanol concentration as high as 1000 parts per million. By the time they finished stuffing themselves with berries, they were too drunk to fly safely.

Pathogens that feed off human blood
Bacteria may be tiny little micro-organisms but like any other living creature there are certain molecules that they need for survival. No matter what niche a bacterial colony occupies, it eventually requires a source of iron. For bacteria that live within the human body, there is one incredibly iron-rich molecule that circulates throughout the human body and can be found permeating the tissues.
Haemoglobin ? the molecule that gives blood its red colour and is used to transport oxgyen through the body.
The structure of haemoglobin, by Richard Wheeler (Zephyris) 2007.
The image above (credit link) shows the structure of the haemoglobin molecule. It consists of four sub-chains (shown in red and blue) each of which carries an iron containing ?haem co-factor? which you can just about see in the diagram as the spikey green things. These haemoglobin molecules are packed tight into red blood cells, so tightly that the red blood cells don?t even have a nucleus but are just haemoglobin carrying machines. The lack of nucleus means that they can?t grown or divide (or do anything much), so after being put together in the bone marrow and circulating the blood for around three months red blood cells are?discreetly?removed and replaced.
All of this circulating iron is a great opportunity for pathogenic bacteria, who have developed various systems to get hold of it. Firstly they have to break down the red blood cells, usually by secreting various chemicals that break up the cell membrane, releasing the haemoglobin. Then they have to bind to the haemoglobin via specialised receptors on their cell surface. Once bound, the haemoglobin passes through the bacterial cell wall and into the interior of the cell. For bacteria with two cell membranes (Gram negative bacteria) this is a complex task involving various different proteins, transporters, and use of the proton-motive force. For bacteria with one large thick cell membrane (Gram positive bacteria) ?some sort of protein relay process seems to be involved, which uses far less energy. Greater detail on both these processes can be found in the references below.
A very simply schematic of the difference between Gram positive bacteria (top) and Gram negative (bottom). Original uploader was Graevemoore at en.wikipedia.
Once inside the bacterium, the haemoglobin is broken down to release the precious iron that it carries. This is more dangerous than it sounds, because the iron in haemoglobin is carrying oxygen, which means that there is potential for reactive oxgyen species to be released and cause havoc inside the cell. Not only that but in some bacteria the ?haem co-factor? itself can be toxic. Some bacteria contain special enzymes called ?Haem oxygenases? which deal with the oxgyen species, while others sequester the haem in vacuoles away from the rest of the cell, or turn on exporter molecules. It?s not quite clear whether the exporters are taking away the haem or some other toxic product, but they are vital for preventing the toxic effects of haemoglobin within the bacteria.
The whole process of extracting iron from haemoglobin is actually fraught with dangers for the bacteria. The process requires all sorts of special molecules and transporters which don?t feature in human cells, which makes them a prime target for the immune system to recognise an invading element. In particular the haemoglobin binding proteins, which are a bit like a large red flag labelled ?invader? sticking out of the bacterial cell surface. Not only that, but they are quite energy expensive to run, particularly for the Gram negative cells. In consequence, the bacteria tend to only activate this system when they are running particularly low on iron, and there are no other available sources around.

Fear of housing bubble in Canada overstated: RBC | Vancouver ...
TORONTO (MarketWatch) ? Fears of a housing bubble in Canada are overstated, the head of Canada?s largest bank by assets said Tuesday.
?We feel pretty good about the housing market,? Royal Bank of Canada?Chief Executive Gordon Nixon said at a Bloomberg Canada Economic Summit in Toronto. ?I would love to see the rhetoric come down a little bit,? he said.
While there may be ?pockets? of concern, such as Vancouver?s condominium market, overall ?we remain quite comfortable? with the housing and real estate market, he said.
Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. said Tuesday there is ?no clear evidence? yet of overheating in the country?s condominium markets, even though policymakers ? most notably the Finance Minister ? have raised concerns about the rapid pace of multi-unit construction projects.

TORONTO (MarketWatch) ? Fears of a housing bubble in Canada are overstated, the head of Canada?s largest bank by assets said Tuesday.
?We feel pretty good about the housing market,? Royal Bank of Canada RY Chief Executive Gordon Nixon said at a Bloomberg Canada Economic Summit in Toronto. ?I would love to see the rhetoric come down a little bit,? he said.
While there may be ?pockets? of concern, such as Vancouver?s condominium market, overall ?we remain quite comfortable? with the housing and real estate market, he said.
Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. said Tuesday there is ?no clear evidence? yet of overheating in the country?s condominium markets, even though policymakers ? most notably Canada?s Finance Minister ? have raised concerns about the rapid pace of multi-unit construction projects.
Nixon said the condominium market does not reflect the overall Canadian housing market.
He said the major risk or shock to the housing market is a ?significant increase in interest rates over time,? which the bank doesn?t expect to happen. Royal Bank has just a small percentage of condominiums in its mortgage portfolio, Nixon said.
Asked about the possibility of RBC expanding into China, Nixon said it?s not part of the bank?s strategy.
?We won?t be buying a bank in China,? he said, adding that RBC will instead take advantage of its strengths to be an intermediary in capital flows between China and Canada.
He also said he doesn?t expect to see any ?transformational acquisitions? in Canadian banking because of the more stringent regulatory climate and higher capital requirements.

Panasonic's Let's Note J10 netbook promises over 12 hours of battery life, available now in Japan
To pair nicely alongside that beastly Let's Note B11 we showed you last week, Panasonic's now also selling its J10 netbook series in Japan. Aesthetically speaking, the new Let's Note J10 isn't much different than its predecessor, the J9, though it has changed a bit (as expected) in the specs department. The entry level 10.1-inch (1366 x 768) J10 gets you Intel's Core i3-2350M CPU with 320GB of hard drive storage as well as 4GB of RAM
, while the higher-end model sports an i7-2640M chip (sorry, no Ivy Bridge here), up to 8GB of memory and you can choose between a 256GB SSD or a 1TB HDD. Additionally, each unit's packing a hefty amount of ports, including two USB 2.0, one USB three-dot-oh and an HDMI out. Those looking to grab one of these J10s best have deep wallets, as pricing ranges from 120,000 yen (about $1,500) all the way up to around 267,000 yen.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 review
When we review a second-generation product there are certain things we tend to take for granted: this new thing, whatever it is, will be thinner, faster, longer-lasting, maybe even with more bells and whistles in tow. With Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1, though, it's a little less obvious why its sequel is here. It offers near-identical specs, including a 10-inch, 1280 x 800 PLS display, dual-core 1GHz chip
, 1GB of RAM and a minimum of 16GB of internal storage. What's more, this generation is slightly thicker and heavier, and sheds the LED flash that used to sit on the back side. But there's one detail we haven't mentioned yet: in addition to softening the specs, Samsung dropped the price by about hundred bucks, so that it now starts at $400.
Clearly, then, the 10.1 has evolved into a mid-range tablet, whereas it used to be the best Samsung had to offer. That's good news for penny-pinching shoppers, but Samsung has a bit of a problem on its hands: it's jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire, dodging direct competition with the new iPad, only to find itself competing with a raft of affordable tablets made by Acer, ASUS and even Apple. So how does Samsung's warmed-over 10.1 compare? Can it be a winner in the mid-tier category, at least? Let's find out.

Samsung considering a 13-inch, 1080p, PLS panel, display snobs get their hopes up
It's a ritual: we publish a review of a laptop with a 1366 x 768 display, the best-rated comment is from someone crying out for 1600 x 900 -- nay, 4K resolution. If you're in the latter camp, you're going to be disappointed by even this article, but for those of you who've merely been craving something, anything crisper than mere HD, we have some hope: Samsung is mulling the idea of a 13-inch, PLS display with a 1920 x 1080 pixel count.
Earlier today a company rep told a group of reporters that the PC division is considering a 1080p panel of that size, which would be unusual, to say the least. The outfit isn't ready to make any promises, much less commit to an ETA, though we can't say we'd be surprised if the company made such a display for its 13-inch laptops first -- after all, for instance, some of its 13-inch panels make use of IPS-like PLS technology, whereas its 15-inch ones don't yet. We'll let you decide if that's even necessary -- both the 13- and 15-inch Series 9 already have 1600 x 900 resolution -- but suffice to say, the company has a good track record of squeezing in extra pixels when other ultraportable makers don't.

Editorial: Thin laptops are the new mainstream, but what about battery life?
Bandwagons, trains and Tranes. Can't say that these three have a heck of a lot in common in most regards, but one thing's for sure: trying to stop this trio would be a Herculean task. And so it goes with laptops -- once upon a time, it was good enough to have something that resembled a portable tower, but these days, the ability to even see the chassis at all feels like a negative.
I exaggerate, of course, but the proverbial race in the laptop world is hardly about price; it's about thinness. Intel's unstoppable quest to plaster the Ultrabook term as far and wide as possible has led to a change in the way consumers are viewing portable machines, and Apple's devilishly thin MacBook Air certainly played a role, too. What we're left with is a very curious priority list, and I'm wondering if too many OEMs have stopped to wonder if the "obvious" is indeed the "right."
I'll be the first to confess that I love the look of thin. Samsung's Series 9 and Acer's Aspire S5 might just be two of the sexiest machines to ever be built, and Dell's original Adamo was primarily of interest due to one thing: its jaw-droppingly thin frame. But there's some saying about putting form before function that seems to apply here, particularly when keying in on battery life. I've no doubt that the marketing and research teams for PC makers far and wide understand the realities of the market place, and perhaps the average consumer really doesn't need more than four to six hours of life on a single charge. Five years ago, squeezing that much life from machines under an inch thick would've required some sort of wizardry that exists only in a rarely visited corner of West Hollywood. But today, I'm a dreamer. And I'm dreaming of a laptop with "all day battery life" -- something that could be screamed from the rooftops, and honestly, something that could probably be accomplished tomorrow if our laptop options weren't on such a diet.

Samsung exec admits the 15-inch Series 9 could benefit from better viewing angles
When we reviewed the 15-inch Samsung Series 9, we found very little to complain about, save for the narrow viewing angles and the fair-weather trackpad. Turns out, Samsung at least agrees with the first part. In a show of candor, Raymond Wah, VP of PC product strategy, told a group of reporters, "We can make improvements in terms of the viewing angle."
"That's not surprising, given that Samsung's homegrown 15-inch display doesn't currently make use of the same IPS-like PLS technology as the panel used in the 13-inch Series 9. It would seem, then, that it's occurred to Samsung to develop one, though company reps declined to say when we might see a 15-inch Series 9 with such a panel in tow.
For now, anyway, the outfit is giving itself some credit for the laptop's relatively dense 1600 x 900 pixel count (and rightfully so!). Interestingly, Wah's comments come at a time when MacBook Pro rumors are starting to flow fast and furious, and a Retina display is looking like a fair possibility. As to whether Samsung will ever produce a 4K laptop display of its own, Wah declined to comment, but he did note that right now there isn't enough content optimized for that higher resolution, and that such screens would be costlier to produce. Until all that changes, we have to admit we're pretty pleased with the Series 9's resolution too -- after all, anything's better than plain old HD.

Sony Xperia GX and SX reportedly coming to Japan in July and August
Sony announced the Xperia GX and Xperia SX just a couple of days ago with an estimated "summer" launch window for both devices. But today leaked documentation obtained by XperiaBlog offers a little more granular detail. According to info obtained by the site, the Xperia GX will arrive in July, with the Xperia SX following shortly after in August. (This roughly matches a leaked Sony roadmap which appeared back in January.)
The documents also reveal plans for NTT Docomo branding atop the Xperia GX's 4.6-inch screen, as well as size and weight info. Apparently the device will weigh 127 grams and measure 131mm x 69mm x 10.2mm. As it features the same arched back design as the Xperia Arc, the thinnest point of the GX measures 8.6mm, same as the Galaxy S III. Apparently it'll also ship with a 1700mAh battery, which should hopefully be enough to power its 1.5GHz dual-core CPU and 720p Sony Reality Display. As we reported earlier in the week, other specs include a 13MP rear camera with 1080p video recording, 1GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage.
And in Xperia SX news, renders included in this latest leak reveal that the phone will apparently ship in pink and orange, in addition to the already-revealed black and white flavors.
Unfortunately there's no news on when (or if) either device will see an international release. Sony tells us that these phones are "designed specifically for the Japanese market," adding "we have not made any announcements with regards to possible availability in other markets."
If you like poring through Japanese technical documents, you'll find more info from today's leak over at the source link.

iCloud.com slip-up shows Notes and Reminders, iOS 6 references
Looks like Apple's going to add more than just banner notifications to iCloud.com in the near future: a randomly available beta.icloud.com page has shown Notes and Reminders alongside familiar iCloud fixtures like email and Find My iPhone. If that wasn't enough, some skulking about in the HTML code of the beta page showed for a time that access to the new features requires signing in to the "iOS 6 beta," a fairly strong indicator that a web refresh will go hand-in-hand with a new mobile platform at this year's WWDC. What else is in store will likely have to wait until the developer event next month, but we at least know now that our iPhone's grocery lists will survive on the web.
[Thanks, Tommy]

Will Jennifer Lopez Leave American Idol?
Hollie Cavanagh may have been eliminated from American Idol last night, but a great deal of buzz surrounding the show afterward centered on Jennifer Lopez and, specifically, her very sexy rendition of "Dance Again."
Alongside boyfriend Casper Smart.
"I don't think we'd work together if we didn't work well together," Lopez told Ryan Seacrest this morning about grinding all up on her 25-year old man in front of millions. "It has to be easy or it's not worth it."
Lopez her certainly made her two years on American Idol worthwhile, using them to kickstart what had been a floundering music career.
So we'll see back for season 12, right? Not so fast. Let the contract negotiating begin
"I don't know," J. Lo said. "I have some movie things in the works and I have the tour. I love the show and it hurts me to think about not doing it, but I'm just taking it kind of day by day. We'll see."
Do you want to see Jennifer Lopez as an American Idol judge on season 12?
